Service Description |
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition which occurs as a result of failure of the lymphatic system to drain lymphatic fluid from various areas of the body. It results in swelling in the affected areas due to lymphatic fluid accumulation, most commonly in a limb. Lymphoedema may occur as a result of acquired damage to the lymphatic system, particularly seen following surgery and treatment for cancer. It may also occur in patients with severe chronic venous insufficiency or morbid obesity with impeded lymphatic drainage. Not all patients with lymphoedema require active treatment, but many require ongoing specialised compression garment prescription, which can only be provided by a registered lymphoedema therapist. At Melton Health the clinician trained in providing specialised complex physical therapy treatment and the measurement of compression garments, is a registered nurse. |
